Filip Benkovic boost for Celtic as Leicester City make move for centre-back

It's not a done deal as yet, but there are plenty encouraging signs over Filip Benkovic returning to Celtic next season.

Brendan Rodgers has promised to consider it, the player himself would have no issue and, with transfer season upon us, Leicester's market moves could be a real indicator.

Harry Maguire is again being linked with big-money moves to the likes of Manchester United and Manchester City and although the Foxes don't want to sell, he could still leave the King Power Stadium for the right price.

According to TEAMtalk, Leicester set to sign Lewis Dunk from Brighton as Maguire's replacement and that would again leave Benkovic some way down the pecking order.

Rodgers does not want the Croatia international, a month shy of his 22nd birthday, to have his development stunted with a lack of first-team football.

The door is certainly ajar for Neil Lennon to get his hands on Benkovic next season but if Dunk's proposed move goes through then it'll be wide open for the Celtic boss.

It would be a timely defensive boost considering Dedryck Boyata's departure and the Premiership champions' lack of a consistent centre-back pairing.

Kristoffer Ajer has emerged as automatic first-choice and was partnered by Jozo Simunovic towards the end of last term.

There's little doubt over Simunovic's capability on a domestic level but he has the kind of injury record that makes a manager anxious.

Benkovic looked a classy operator season before his season was derailed by a nasty ankle problem.

But he now looks back up to speed; fit and representing Croatia this summer, although he is likelier to gain more game-time for the U21s at the European Championship.

If Celtic can land him on another season-long deal their chances of clinching nine-in-a-row, and perhaps improving in Europe, certainly would not be harmed.
