Fikayo Tomori went under the radar but Chelsea fans have a new hero to embrace

Last season, Fikayo Tomori went under the radar somewhat for Chelsea fans during his loan spell at Derby County.

The one time that Blues supporters got to see him at Stamford Bridge, the defender accidentally turned the ball into the back of his own net.

But that snapshot was never a true representation of his campaign, and being named Player of the Season for the Rams proved that there was a real talent there.

When Tomori made the switch back to Chelsea in the summer, it appeared that his time would be short-lived, with David Luiz, Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Kurt Zouma all above him in the pecking order.

A loan move to Everton was on the cards, with the Toffees failing to prise Zouma away from the Blues on a permanent deal.

However, the shock move across London from Luiz on transfer deadline day opened up a spot in the squad and Tomori got his opportunity.

The start of the season went to form, with Christensen and Zouma starting the campaign, while Rudiger injured from the back-end of the previous campaign.

While Tomori came on as a late substitute in the Super Cup, Tomori got his chance to really shine against Wolverhampton Wanderers, and he certainly took it.

With a stunning finish and accomplished performance, the 21-year-old has never looked back and has become the number one centre-back in the club right now.

"It’s not just the past weeks" Mount said. "It’s last year as well, how well he did. I’m very close to Fik so my opinion is he's definitely good enough.

"You can see by his performances. He’s strong, he’s quick, he’s confident on the ball.

"There’s a lot of young exciting players coming through at the moment and we’re just working hard and getting our head down."

With an average of three tackles a game in the Premier League, with another three interceptions as well has seen him win the trust of Blues supporters.

Tomori has become a fixture in the team and almost the first name on the teamsheet, something that has earned him his first call-up to the England senior squad.

"I think that his profile as a defender fits with the way that international football is. His athleticism is important, he's capable on the ball," Gareth Southgate said.

"We think it’s a good opportunity for us to have a closer look at him with training in our group because we have not worked with Fik as closely as some of the other young players throughout the age groups.

"And he is in good form, he will be feeling confident. He has played very well for Chelsea in some big games against big opponents. It is again a great opportunity for him."

Trust from Frank Lampard and his passion on the pitch has already won him over with the Chelsea supporters, and that will surely continue.

There have been the odd slips, for example towards the end of the win over Lille he played a poor back pass that almost cost them.

But when Rudiger comes back into the side, then Tomori will not be the one stepping out and the Blues fans have another hero to celebrate.
