Fiji are celebrating their first ever Olympic medal after they outplayed Great Britain from start to finish to win gold in the first Olympic men’s rugby sevens tournament with a 43-7 victory in the final at the Deodoro Stadium in Rio.
The Fijians were too strong and quick for a sloppy GB side and ran in five tries in the first half to put the result beyond doubt by the interval.
Britain tightened up at the start of the second half but Fiji still added one more converted try before a consolation try and conversion. One more try in the final minute completed the rout.
South Africa, who had been beaten by Great Britain 7-5 in a tight semi-final, won the bronze medal with a 54-14 victory over Japan.
