Fight to protect school land

Usually, there will be fight against encroachments with private persons/ parties by people who wish to protect their lands/ assets.

But in a typical case, some old students of a government high school/ junior college are fighting against the government to protect the land that belongs to High School. This is happening at Medak district headquarters town, about 70 kilometres from the State capital

The Government Boys High School and Junior College were located in the district headquarters. It was stated that the area of the school was once spread in about 30 acres and later it was reduced to 11 acres for various reasons including encroachments.

As a matter of policy, the State Government has decided to establish integrated vegetable and non-vegetable markets in towns across the state and as part of that some three acres of land from the High School/ Junior College is being taken back by the government. In the integrated market there will be vegetable and non-veg markets.

Old Students Association and Senior Citizens Association are seriously objecting the decision of the government stating that the empty place in the school purpose must be used for education purpose only and must not be used for any other purposes.

“This school was established in 1946 and many stalwarts like former speaker P. Ramachandra Reddy and IAS officer Ramanachary got educated here. I myself was student of the school between 1965 – 1969. Establishment of integrated market would naturally invite unhealthy environment near the school premises. Different animals and birds will reach there for food despite all precautions. In addition, bad odor will be there making it inconvenient to the students and teachers as well,” Malkaji Satyanaranaya, alumni of the school and who is leading the fight, told The Hindu, adding that there are about 1,000 students studying in the School and Junior College.

Several representations were submitted to the officials in this regard requesting them to chose another location to establish integrated market but of no use.

“We have filed a Writ Petition (PIL) in the High Court through our advocate T. Rajasekhar in this regard and it was admitted,” said Mr. Satyanarayana adding that the court has given stay on this issue and they were yet to receive the copy. He said that the court has directed not to take up any construction activity till writ petitions was disposed
