Fight between 'friends for some time' leaves one dead, one in hospital

Yass property where two men were found with stab wounds, one of whom died at the scene.

A man has died and another is in hospital with stab wounds after a violent fight near Yass, north of Canberra.

Police said emergency services were called to a "rural property" at Good Hope, 20 kilometres south of Yass, about 2:45am this morning.

On arriving at the scene they found a man in his 30s, believed to be the property's owner, dying of a single stab wound.

Officers found a second man, also in his 30s, who had been stabbed as well.

A knife was found at the scene and forensics teams are investigating.

The surviving man was taken to Canberra Hospital for treatment, but remains under police guard.

Hume Police District Superintendent Chris Schilt confirmed that the two men "were known to each other, and had been friends for some time".

He also said the men were known to police.

"These things are always horrific scenes," Superintendent Schilt said.

"At this stage, early in the investigation, we don't believe anyone else was present at the house.

"We are speaking to witnesses, trying to get all of the details of the callers, anyone who may have heard or known anything, and we always encourage people with information to contact Crime Stoppers."
