Fight footage suggests Anthony Joshua was 'saved from KO' by early final bell

Boxing fans have speculated that Anthony Joshua was saved from a late stoppage against Oleksandr Usyk as the final bell appeared to ring early.

Usyk won Joshua's heavyweight titles when he outpointed the Brit on all three judges' scorecards, with the scores reading 117-112, 116-112 and 115-113.

The betting favourite Joshua was out-landed by Usyk for most of the fight and only found his rhythm in the fifth and sixth rounds.

Joshua claimed he couldn't see out of his right eye from the ninth round onwards after Usyk's punches caused a massive swelling.

Usyk ended the fight in dominant fashion, landing 29 punches in the twelfth round as he came close to stopping Joshua at the final bell.

But footage of the final round appears to show the bell ring five seconds early with UFC commentator Joe Rogan saying: "Did they really ring the bell for the last round early?" in response to another post.

Boxing fans were quick to weigh in on the controversial ending to the fight, with one stating: "They knew Joshua was getting tagged up."

Another user wrote: "Robbed Usyk of the KO. That was a stoppage."

And a third added "For sure. Tried to save AJ from a TKO."

The loss has seemingly halted Joshua's long-awaited fight against Tyson Fury - who he was signed to fight last month before an arbitration judge ruled in favour of Deontay Wilder's trilogy against Fury.

WBC champion Fury will fight Wilder on October 9 in Las Vegas, with the winner potentially facing Usyk in an undisputed title clash.

But Joshua is keen on avenging his loss after recovering from his eye injury, with February or March of next year being a likely date for the rematch.

And British heavyweight Dillian Whyte - who handed Joshua his first loss on the amateur circuit - also thinks that referee Michael Alexander should have stopped the fight in the closing seconds.

What did you make of Joshua's performance against Usyk? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

He told iFL TV : "I think Usyk should win by TKO in the last round. I thought they gave Joshua way too much time but he just sagged on the ropes and stood there, he didn't do anything. I thought Usyk deserved a TKO victory.

"I was surprised the way the fight went, I picked Joshua to win in seven rounds because I thought he would have enforced his size and pressure, sheer bulk and athleticism but he didn't. He was just reserved.

"He was sensitive, a bit like 'I wanna punch I'm not gonna punch, I wanna move my head I'm not gonna move my head', it's weird man. I don't know, it was like the whole Andy Ruiz performance all over again."
