A PERSON who attempted to attend the Tim Tszyu versus Stevie Spark fight at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre on Wednesday was issued a penalty notice for being from an area subject to current public health restrictions.

A NSW Police spokesperson said a "high-visibility compliance operation" was undertaken by Newcastle City Police District at the event to ensure people in attendance were complying with public health orders.

"This operation included police conducting ID checks for all patrons to ensure compliance with the current Public Health Orders in place. For those patrons without a physical form of identification, a digital licence was observed and then cross-checked with additional NSW Police Force systems. As a result, police issued one Penalty Infringement Notice (PIN) to a patron for fail to comply with noticed direction."

Police would continue to work with relevant stakeholders to develop a strategy for further events - such as the third State Of Origin - planned for the district in the coming weeks.

State emergency operations controller, Deputy Commissioner Gary Worboys, said police in Greater Sydney and regional locations were sharing information and would continue to patrol transport hubs to check that people were complying with the stay-at-home direction.
