Fight called off minutes before first bell as boxer taken ill in dressing room

A super-welterweight contest was called off just moments before it was due to start after Russian star Magomed Kurbanov was taken ill in the dressing room prior to his clash with Patrick Teixeira.

The meeting was scheduled to take place between the pair as the co-feature on the undercard of light-heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol's title defence against Umar Salamov.

Both fighters were looking to solidify their world title credentials and were in attendance with the fight set to get underway.

However, the fight was pulled from the bill after the home fighter Kurbanov was taken ill in the dressing room with a "fever" with just minutes until the bout was set to get underway.

Teixeira was ready to go in his own dressing room and had his hands wrapped and gloves on as he looked to dethrone the undefeated star.

It remains unclear whether the fight will be rescheduled for a later date but immediate concerns will be with Kurbanov who was unable to take to the ring.

The action was being broadcast on DAZN as a part of a bumper bill in Russia headlined by Bivol's latest hotly-anticipated outing against Salamov.

With top-level pedigree, Bivol has earned huge plaudits for his undefeated career to date which have led him to be named as a potential candidate to face Canelo Alvarez.

Bivol has also been seen on domestic shores defeating Craig Richards last time out in a punch-perfect display to retain his light-heavyweight world title.

An all-Russian showdown has frequently been touted against fellow champion Artur Beterbiev, who is also a leading fighter in the division and boasts an undefeated record.

A clash with pound-for-pound king Alvarez now looks unlikely after the Mexican announced his weight hike to compete for a cruiserweight world title against Ilunga Makabu.

The sport's leading star defeated Caleb Plant earlier this year to become the first undisputed champion at super-middleweight after his quick-fire journey through the division.

Alvarez has also naturally been touted to face Gennady Golovkin in a trilogy battle after their two historic meetings earlier in their careers.

But the Kazakh star Golovkin has cast doubts on the pair facing each other again in the aftermath of the cancellation of his scheduled contest with Ryota Murata.

"This fight is possible," Golovkin told Sky Sports. "Theoretically nothing has changed. There are certain questions which have been posed. They are still open, they remain unanswered.

"We have been discussing it but haven't moved towards this fight for quite some time. We fought, I know who he is. I don't think about him at all, It isn't something I don't give any thought to.

"I don't want to entertain moving to a different division unless there is an offer on the table. Imagine if I moved to 175lbs [light-heavyweight], the number of people calling me out will increase by 30 per cent! The army of fighters who self-promote themselves by using my name would only increase in number."
