A 36-year-old Queensland man has been charged over a stabbing at a Brisbane primary school on Wednesday.

The man allegedly became involved in an argument with another man, 45, in the car park of the Wynnum state school on Boxgrove Avenue about 2.45pm and allegedly stabbed him in the chest and wrist.

The victim was taken to Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The younger man will face the Wynnum magistrates court on Thursday morning, charged with acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm, assault, possessing a knife and wounding.

On Wednesday police said the incident involved “two males known to each other [who] were involved in an altercation”.

Insp Andrew Dupere told the Courier-Mail the fight escalated when one man produced a 15cm kitchen knife.

Dupere said that “children and parents were coming out at the time which is the distressing part”.

However, an education department spokesman said the stabbing “occurred while students were in class, and they were unlikely to witness it”.

“It was witnessed by parents waiting in the pick-up area,” he said.

“Alternative pick-up arrangements were made to shepherd students away from the area.

“The department will offer support and counselling for parents and siblings that require it.”

The spokesman said staff had “acted quickly” to call police and “the safety and wellbeing of students is the department’s highest priority”.

An ambulance service spokeswoman said paramedics arrived about 2.50pm and a man was taken to Princess Alexandra hospital in a “serious condition”.

The man had suffered wounds to the “back, face and hands”.
