It is reportedly on course to be the most-watched trailer of all time after picking up more than 50m views in its first few days of release. But the teaser for JJ Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been beaten into second place for the most popular trailer in 2014 by the debut glimpse of mega-hyped “mommy porn” literary adaptation Fifty Shades of Grey.
The teaser for Sam Taylor-Johnson’s sex drama, which stars Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson as kinky business magnate Christian Grey and his blushing virginal paramour, Anastasia Steele, has been viewed more than 93m times since debuting on 24 July.
The Force Awakens comes in second on a list compiled by YouTube partner Zefr, having picked up more than 81m views in a much shorter time: it only hit the web on 28 November.
Third on the list is the trailer for Joss Whedon’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron, which generated plenty of buzz after leaking online in October ahead of a planned debut screening via Marvel TV show Agents of Shield. It has since picked up 78m views.
The top five was rounded out by the trailers for sci-fi sequel Jurassic World, with 64m views since 25 November, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, with 58m views since March.
