Fifty homes evacuated in Burnley as 'suspicious' package found at cricket club

Around 50 homes have been evacuated after a suspicious package was found at Burnley Cricket Club.

Bomb disposal officers have been called to the area to deal with the package, leading to a 100-metre cordon being established, Lancs Live reports.

Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams are on their way as the properties, in Belvedere Road and Leyland Road, are evacuated.

Traffic in the area is said to be "gridlocked" as scores of parents attempt to pick their children up from school. Road closures are in place and access to the front of Burnley Football Club is restricted.

Lancashire Police revealed a map of properties within an evacuation zone as they deal with the "suspicious package."

Burnley and Padiham Police said: "We are currently responding to reports a suspicious package has been found at Burnley Cricket Club on Belvedere Road.

"Officers are at the scene and a 100m cordon is currently in place while we investigate."

The EOD has been called to assess the package, it added.

A rest centre is being set up at St Peter's Centre.

Traffic is queuing from Yorkshire Street to Ormerod Road as Belvedere Road has been closed in both directions.
