Fifth person charged over murder of Canberra man Eden Waugh

A fifth person has been charged over the murder of Watson man Eden Waugh, who was shot dead in his apartment two years ago.

Phouthakone Sikounnabouth, 23, faced the ACT Magistrates Court this morning charged with murder (joint commission) and aggravated robbery.

It is alleged that on the night of the killing, he also used force to steal a woman's handbag containing $200 in cash, debit cards and a mobile phone.

Mr Sikounnabouth was also charged over an aggravated robbery and several assaults that occurred at Mr Waugh's home less than two months before his death.

In September 2016, Mr Sikounnabouth is alleged to have gone to Mr Waugh's home with his co-accused Peter Forster Jones and another man, where he allegedly assaulted three people including Mr Waugh.

He was also charged with trespassing with the intention of committing a crime.

Mr Sikounnabouth was formally refused bail, and will return to court in September.

Mr Waugh died after he was shot in the chest at his apartment in Canberra's north in November 2016.

It is understood he was killed in front of his girlfriend.

Today Detective Acting Superintendent Matthew Reynolds said the investigation was ongoing and did not rule out further charges.

"This is a significant milestone in the investigation and goes some way to seeking justice for the family," he said.

"This is a very complex investigation and the homicide detectives, as well as other police investigators, have been working tirelessly on this for two years."

Two other people have been charged with various offences over their alleged involvement with the crime.

Previously, officers retrieved a shotgun and a crowbar from the Queanbeyan River, in what they said was a search linked to the investigation.
