Fifth Greenock horror firebomb explodes in flat after spate of gangland attacks in town

Another horror fire bomb exploded in a Greenock flat last night.

Emergency services raced to Kincaid Court at around 10pm after reports of a blaze cops are probing as deliberate.

Flames could be seen erupting from the window of a ground floor flat on the residential street as firefighters tackled the explosion.

This is the fifth flame attack to have hit the Inverclyde town in recent weeks.

Cops say they are keeping an open mind as to whether this incident is linked to the others.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said enquiries are at an early stage but the fire is being treated at wilful.

Adding: "No one was injured and a joint investigation is ongoing to establish the cause of the fire, however at this time it is being treated as wilful.

"We are keeping an open mind at this time and cannot rule anything out at this early stage."

One person has died in  a terrifying spate of attacks in the town so far, with locals fearing more will lose their lives after a series of retaliation blazes targeting innocent women and children in other houses.

A source, who did not wished to be named for fears over his safety, told the Daily Record last week that the war erupted after a gangland boss behind bars ordered a hit on the home of a rival in the town.

He said the incidents are linked to a year long gangland feud between the con and another man that started over a drug debt.

The man said the first attack at a home Union Street on September 14 was ordered by the prisoner, who paid local man George Miller £500 and supplied him with crack cocaine.

46-year-old Miller died in the attack.

Shocking CCTV footage capturing his death emerged online the following day.

Two days later, on September 16 at around 11.05pm,  a woman and nine-year-old girl were targeted in a second firebomb attack in the town's Wellington Street.

The source said: "When everything went wrong on the first hit, word got back to the con's rival and he paid some associates to hit back at the house Miller had been heading for."

A 40-year-old woman inside the property was raced to Glasgow Royal Infirmary with serious injuries. Medics say she remains in a stable condition.

The young girl escaped the incident uninjured.

It's believed the blaze was started by an accelerant launched through a window.

Cops probing the attack are treating it as 'wilful fire raising' and say 'substantial damage' was caused to the property.

Detective Superintendent Gerry McBride said the community was 'appalled' that children could have been killed in the blaze horrors and warned 'this stops now'.

He said: "First and foremost we'd like to share the voices of Inverclyde in expressing our disgust and how sickened we are at these recent fire attacks.

"Our information just now and our enquiries have led us to believe that they are targeted at individuals to some extent.

"There are potential peripheral victims, with children involved, and we are absolutely appalled that they could come to risk of harm along with anyone else in the nearby buildings."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 10.09pm on Monday, 28 September, to reports of a fire within a bottom floor flat on Kincaid Court, Greenock, Inverclyde.

“Operations Control mobilised four appliances to the four-storey building.

“Firefighters extinguished the fire in the unoccupied flat.

“There were no reported casualties."
