A total of 11,262 have now died from the virus in Scotland, it added.

The latest data shows that during the week of October 4-10, 126 registered fatalities included the cause was Covid-19 on their death certificate, a decrease of 17 on the previous week.

For the second time in as many weeks, the number has continued to fall.

Of those reported deaths, 26 were under the age of 65, 24 of them were aged between 64-74 and 76 were aged 75 or over.

The majority of those cases - 98 - were already in hospital with the virus and the remaining 19 were in care homes. Nine were at home or in a non-institutional setting.

Glasgow was the area with the highest number of coronavirus-linked deaths with 14, followed by West Dumbartonshire at ten and West Lothian with nine.

Pete Whitehouse, NRS statistical service director, said: "The latest figures show that last week there were 126 deaths where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate. This is 17 fewer deaths than last week.

"With 1,353 deaths from all causes this week, this is now the 20th consecutive week with excess deaths above the five-year average and is the highest level of excess deaths - 315 this week - since week one (4 - 10 January) of 2021."

The most recent Scottish coronavirus figures show that the country recorded 30 deaths and 2,581 new cases in the past 24 hours.

The test positivity rate is down at 7.7%, down from 10.5% the previous day.

A total of 918 people were in hospital with recently confirmed Covid-19 on Tuesday, down 17, with 51 patients in intensive care.
