Fifteen places where Covid is on the rise as lockdown eases - is your area on the list?

Parts of England are still seeing increases in coronavirus infection rates as lockdown begins easing.

Restrictions began gradually lifting this week as schools reopened fully for the first time in months on Monday.

Infection rates have been dropping steadily around the UK as winter shutdown and vaccine rollout both take effect.

Tragically the UK's death toll lift by 231 on Tuesday. However the figure was a striking 78% drop on the number of fatalities recorded at the same time last month.

Of the 315 local areas in England, 15 (or 5%) are still seeing a rise in case rates as society begins its phased reopening.

In more promising statistics, 299 areas of England ( or 95% of the country) have seen a fall and one is unchanged, according to the latest official figures.

South Derbyshire has the highest Covid rate in England, with 160 new cases recorded in the seven days to March 5 - the equivalent of 149.2 cases per 100,000 people.

This is down from 155.7 per 100,000 in the seven days to February 26.

Barnsley has the second highest rate, down from 167.7 to 146.2, with 361 new cases.

Redditch in Worcestershire is in third place, down from 175.9 to 145.4, with 124 new cases.

The figures, for the seven days to March 5, are based on tests carried out in laboratories and in the wider community (pillar two).

The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people.
Data for the most recent four days (March 6-9) has been excluded as it is incomplete and does not reflect the true number of cases.

The top five areas to record a week-on-week rise are:

Derbyshire Dales (up from 63.6 to 132.7)

Craven, North Yorkshire (31.5 to 47.3)

East Devon (41.7 to 54.7)

Canterbury, Kent (24.2 to 33.3)

Welwyn Hatfield, Hertfordshire (60.1 to 66.6)

A further ten areas are also still recording week-on-week rises.

However it should be noted that some of the areas below were recording case numbers in the single digits, and therefore the rises in infection rates are not statistically significant.

The ten other areas recording rises in infection rates, ranked by the size of the increase are:

Uttlesford, Essex (24.1 to 29.6 or 22 to 27 cases)

South Bucks, Buckinghamshire (45.7 to 50.0 or 32 to 25 cases)

Kingston upon Thames, London (40.6 to 44.5 or 72 to 79 cases)

West Devon (7.2 to 10.8 or four to six cases)
Basingstoke and Deane, Hampshire (50.4 to 53.8, r 89 to 95 cases)

Seaton, in Devon, where infection rates are rising in some areas (Alamy Stock Photo)

Elmbridge, Surrey (35.1 to 37.3 or 48 to 51 cases)

Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire (27.4 to 28.4 or 26 to 27 cases)

West Oxfordshire (25.3 to 26.2 or 28 to 29 cases)

Guildford, Surrey (34.2 to 34.9 or 51 to 52 cases)

South Somerset (46.9 to 47.5 or 79 to 80 cases)

Full list of infection rates by area

The list has been calculated by the PA news agency based on Public Health England data published on March 9 on the Government's coronavirus dashboard.

Here is the list in full. From left to right, it reads: name of local authority; rate of new cases in the seven days to March 5; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to March 5; rate of new cases in the seven days to February 26; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to February 26.
