Fifteen mile tailbacks after M6 crash involving trailer full of cows

An accident involving a trailer carrying cows caused long delays on the M6 near Warrington this morning.

It happened at around 7.35am on the M6 between Junctions 21 and 21A (the Croft interchange for the M62), and affected both northbound and southbound carriageways.

Traffic was held in both directions between 8.35am and 8.45am while the cows were transferred to another trailer following the accident.

Drivers faced tailbacks stretching to 15 miles as emergency services dealt with the incident. None of the animals are believed to have been harmed.

The accident also affected traffic on the M56 on the approach to the Lymm interchange, with congestion also stretching to Junction 26 (M58  Orrell  interchange).

All lanes were re-opened by 9am.
