Fife officers come under fire for breaking social distancing rules amid coronavirus outbreak

Fife officers have come under fire on social media after breaking social distancing rules during a "clap for carers" tribute.

The officers joined crowds gathered outside Victoria Hospital, in Kirkcaldy, on Thursday night in support of NHS staff and frontline workers.

However, the force have been blasted online after footage revealed dozens of officers and members of the public failed to maintain the Government's two metre distancing guidance - which is designed to limit the spread of coronavirus.

Sharing a clip from the event on Twitter, Glenrothes Police said: "Big thanks to all the NHS workers across the UK from all the Emergency Services who came together tonight at Victoria Hospital to show our appreciation. #OurNHS #COVID19."

The post has seen an outpouring of criticism, with one user pointing out that it shouldn't have been allowed to happen, especially while people can't attend the funerals of loved ones.

"This is ridiculous, social distancing applies to absolutely everyone, what were you thinking?", asked one Twitter user.

"Totally get it and a great gesture but where is the social distancing from your officers and in fact everyone else there," noted another.

One person asked: "So much for public gatherings of more than two people currently being banned. I’m pretty certain these lockdown rules apply to everyone?"

While some defended the move, one user even praised their "appreciation" but admitted "this was not your smartest effort".

The Local Area Commander for Central Division, Fife, Chief Inspector Tom Brown says advice was given to those taking part.

He told The Herald: "This event was arranged with the best intentions to provide visibility and recognition to all staff who are caring for us during this difficult time in line with the national #clapforcarers campaign.

"Unfortunately during this event there were breaches of social distancing guidelines.

"Advice was given to those taking part about the importance of social distancing to prevent future breaches and no further action was required."
