Fife locals left stunned after watching Lonagnnet Power Station being demolished

Locals were left stunned at some dramatic scenes in Fife today as the Lonagnnet Power Station was finally demolished.

The huge structure was caught on camera as it toppled to the ground, leaving huge clouds of smoke billowing into the air.

Accompanied by an almighty boom, the building gave some nearby residents a bit of a shock as it disappeared forever.

Built in 1973, the site was once part of the coal powerhouse in Europe, and had claimed the title as the biggest coal-fired power station in the country.

However, since its days of producing around 4.5 million tonnes of coal a year, the station was closed in 2016 and has been long waiting on its demolition date.

On Thursday, Lonagnnet swept its dust across the Firth of Forth, with locals as far as Grangemouth and Skinflats reported to have heard the band.

According to the Record, people in the area have taken to social media after hearing a 'massive bang'.

One wrote: "What the f*** was that massive bang? It did not sound good."

Another said: "There's a huge smoke bomb hovering across the Firth of Forth...anyone know what's happened?"

A third said: "That was a pretty impressive blast coming from Longannet, I had a great view from my kitchen."
