Fife 'covidiots' charged after they travel to Ben Lomond and have to be rescued

Two women have been charged by police for "culpable and reckless conduct" after breaking coronavirus rules to have a day trip to Ben Lomond.

The pair in their twenties travelled outside their local authority area in Fife to visit the mountain which lies within the Ben Lomond National Memorial Park and the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park.

Lomond Mountain Rescue Team and emergency services were called out on Saturday afternoon (24 January 2020) after the two woman got stuck during their walk due to the bad weather.

The mountain rescue team uploaded pictures of the rescue on Facebook, penning: " #CallOut Ben Lomond 14.40 to assist two walkers near the summit who required the Teams help. All safely returned to the foot of the mountain by 18.30 (Pic G Kelly & S Tinley LMRT)."

Current coronavirus restrictions state that Scots can only travel five miles out of their local authority boundary for essential reasons such as exercise, caring duties or shopping. A trip from Fife to Ben Lomond is about 84.2 miles.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers were called to assist Mountain Rescue partners on Ben Lomond at around 2pm on Saturday, 23 January, 2021 after two female walkers requested assistance to descend the hill in deteriorating weather conditions.
