FIFA yet to make key decision that will impact Chelsea's Premier League season over Christmas

Chelsea have got off to an excellent start in the 2021-22 campaign and remain undefeated in all competitions so far, but their season could soon be disrupted.

Following their Champions League victory, the Blues were set to compete in the 2021 FIFA Club World Cup in Japan but, due to COVID-19 problems, the hosts had to pull out.

The search for a new host nation has been underway for over two weeks now but despite the United Arab Emirates and South Africa both putting themselves in the running, a decision is yet to be reached. Thomas Tuchel is looking to add a third trophy to his Chelsea haul.

On September 9, FIFA released a statement saying: "Fifa can confirm that it has been informed today by the Japan Football Association (JFA) that, due to the Covid-19 pandemic and hosting situation in the country, they are no longer in a position to host the Fifa Club World Cup.

“Fifa would like to thank the JFA for their work and commitment and looks forward to going back to Japan in the future. Further details about an alternative host for the Fifa Club World Cup 2021 will be announced by Fifa in due course.”

A report emerged on Thursday morning detailing that the tournament may now be moved to early next year to allow for all necessary preparations to be taken.

The National, a publication based in the UAE, reported the news, saying FIFA were considering a "revised date" for the competition.

Given that the original date of December 9 until 19 is still in place, it is likely any delay will move into 2022, rather than disrupt the busy Christmas schedule of Chelsea and the other competitors.

FIFA is yet to comment on the latest report, although an announcement is expected in "due course".
