FIFA World Cup 2022 Fantasy Football - Where and how to play

Over the past decade or so, fantasy football has become ever-increasingly popular - with fans around the world having the opportunity to step into a manager's shoes for the season and hopefully guide their side to victory.

Coupled with successful video games like FIFA and Football Manager, these virtual campaigns have become a household staple for anyone and everyone, no matter how casual or die-hard they are with regards to the sport.

And although most leagues around the globe have kicked off and are well into their seasons by now, a World Cup has postponed domestic football until after the usually-scheduled Christmas break - meaning that stattos will wait ever so slightly longer than usual to pick up points against friends and competitors in their online tournaments.

But it's not all doom and gloom, as FIFA has launched its own fantasy football for the World Cup itself - and players who register before it gets underway this Sunday are in with a chance to win tickets to this year's coveted final in Qatar.

Here's how to register, as well as the rules of the so called 'beautiful game'.

Where to play:

Football governing body FIFA has gone all out for this year's World Cup event - going as far to develop a fantasy football game for the duration. The game is accessible to fans around the world by creating a FIFA+ account.

You can get started, here.

The game itself is completely free to play, and you can even build private leagues with friends to compete in - to prove once and for all, who is the biggest football buff in your friendship group. Alternatively, you can take on players from around the world and put your name in the hate for some serious bragging rights.

How to play:

After registering for an account, you then build a team on a strict $100million budget. You have to pick out a full starting eleven as well as four substitutes using this, so don't go blowing all of your money on five or six world-class players and leaving nothing for the rest of your squad.

After all, once the budget is gone...it's gone.

Two goalkeepers, five defenders, five midfielders and three forwards are also required in all, so you can't go spending your mega millions on a boat load of sole strikers and play them all over the shop. Once your team is complete, you select your starting eleven who can attain points on matchdays.

You also must select a captain who sees their individual points doubled.

How to get points:

Points are awarded for goals, assists and clean sheets respectively - but they can also be decucted for yellow and red cards, as well as dreaded own goals.

There are also three super boosts which can be used throughout the tournament at your leisure - but remember, they can only be used once, so be very careful with them.

The 'wildcard' boost allows you to make unlimited transfers in a single round - while the usual limit set is just two during the group stages. 'Power captain' meanwhile allows your highest scoring player in a single round to accumulate double points instead of just your captain.

Finally, '12th man' allows you to pick a player from your bench (who usually wouldn't accrue points) to be counted towards your team score.

Good luck and go have some fun!
