FIFA to 'extend' 2019-20 football season as leagues aim to finish current campaign - reports

The move by the world governing body will allow each country’s football authority to determine when campaigns can finish.

FIFA, according to a report from The Athletic , will also alter the dates of the summer transfer window and allow contract extensions for players whose deals are set to run out on June 30.

The report claims the plans are likely to be revealed in full in the next 48 hours and will afford maximum flexibility to leagues across the globe, as the spread of Covid-19 is different in each country.

UEFA once again reaffirmed their intentions to finish the current campaign when it is deemed safe to do so last week, with the Premier League season having been at a standstill since March 13.

Although the report does state that the decision by FIFA does not take null and void off the table, it does, they believe, reduce the chances of seasons being cancelled altogether.

The planned announcement was greeted by one Premier League club as “really sensible” according to the report, with it removing the pressure to conclude the season at a time when most of the world is in lockdown.

While in the same piece, The Athletic is also reporting that no timeframes were discussed at great length in Friday’s meeting between Premier League clubs.

A report in the Mirror on Monday claimed Premier League chiefs are currently locked in talks with the British government about a June return for top-flight action.

But some Premier League clubs do, however, accept that there might be no option but for the campaign to resume behind closed doors or even at neutral grounds.

While one manager of an EFL club told the publication over the weekend that he has concerns about extending contracts if there is no clear date for a return to football.

The manager also has concerns about the integrity of the league, with some players not playing to their full potential as they know their long-term future doesn't lie at the club.
