Fifa to block La Liga's plan to stage Girona vs Barcelona in Miami

Fifa president Gianni Infantino says he will block the controversial proposal from La Liga to stage Girona’s game against Barcelona in Miami next January 27.

La Liga, in conjunction with entertainment group Relevant, unveiled plans in August to hold one league fixture per season in North America and after much deliberation, the Catalan derby was the chosen match.

Both clubs had agreed to the move, which was to see Girona’s home match at Montilivi moved to Miami early next year.

However, speaking at a Fifa Council meeting in Rwanda, Infantino said: “I’m frontally opposed and I deny permission for the Barca-Girona in Miami.

“The Fifa Council has discussed the matter and we maintain that official matches from national leagues must be played in that country.”

La Liga president Javier Tebas said a month ago that the fixture had a “90% chance” of going ahead in the United States.
