Fifa statement issued after Iran calls for World Cup matches to be moved from US

  • Fifa has appeared to rule out relocating Iran's World Cup matches from the United States, despite earlier suggestions of a move to Mexico.
  • The president of the Iranian football federation, Mehdi Taj, had stated Iran was “negotiating” with Fifa to move games due to security concerns following US and Israeli air strikes.
  • A Fifa spokesperson confirmed the organisation is “looking forward to all participating teams competing as per the match schedule announced” after the World Cup draw in December.

  • While Fifa regulations allow for match relocation due to “force majeure” or security concerns, the organisation has indicated it will not be exercising this option for Iran's fixtures.
