Fifa risks more fan fury as its resale site lists World Cup final tickets at £1.7m

  • Four seats for the World Cup final are listed on Fifa's official resale site for just under $2.3m (£1.71m), located behind a goal in the lower deck at MetLife Stadium.
  • Fifa, while not controlling the asking prices, charges a 15 per cent purchase fee from the buyer and a 15 per cent cut from the seller on its resale marketplace.
  • Other high-priced tickets include an aisle seat for 207,000 (£153,600), while a category two seat in the last row of the uppermost third deck was listed at $138,000 (£102,400), with the lowest-priced final tickets starting at just under $11,000 (£8,200) for four seats.
  • Fifa president Gianni Infantino defended the steep ticket prices last week, explaining that World Cup revenue is the organisation's sole source of income every four years, which is then reinvested into developing football across 211 countries as a non-profit entity.
  • A recent release of World Cup tickets, including a new “front category” pricing, has drawn online criticism from supporters who allege that superior seats were withheld from earlier category purchases.
