FIFA president Gianni Infantino pays tribute to former Republic of Ireland striker Michael Robinson

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has sent his condolences to the family of Michael Robinson following his death this week.

The former Republic of Ireland and Liverpool striker died in Spain on Tuesday aged 61 after a battle with skin cancer.

In a letter to FAI president Gerry McAnaney, Infantino said: “I would like to express my sincerest and heartfelt condolences on the passing of Michael Robinson.

“Words seem inadequate to express the sadness we feel for this loss affecting Irish football.

“Whole-hearted player, well known respected figure in the Spanish football media, a person who loved football and who knew how to explain it with knowledge and passion.

“His legacy and achievements, and in particular his friendly personality, his popularity, his charism and his human qualities, will not be forgotten, and he will be truly missed.

“On behalf of the international football community, I extend our deepest sympathy to The Football Association of Ireland, and to Michael’s family, friends and loved ones.

FAI president McAnaney said: “It’s clear from all the tributes that Michael was one of the game’s true gentlemen as well as being a very fine footballer.”
