FIFA new name revealed by EA after split as FIFA games to stop being made

EA has announced it is stopping making FIFA games in 2023 in a blow to fans of the PlayStation and Xbox series worldwide.

Electronic Arts is splitting from FIFA, which means that the hugely popular games series - the most recent edition of which was FIFA 22 - will now be reworked into a new series instead.

EA will carry on making football games but instead is going to rename them EA Sports FC after this year's (and next season's) FIFA 23.

It is the first time the EA football game will not be called 'FIFA' since the very first FIFA 1993 game.

While FIFA games are mega profitable, with reports of over £1billion a year being made from the game's Ultimate Team mode alone, the official FIFA licence is quite expensive and the two giants couldn't agree on terms to renew it.

A statement from EA said: "I want to start by thanking this incredible community of more than 150 million fans for helping build the world’s biggest football entertainment platform - EA SPORTS FIFA. After nearly 30 years of creating genre-defining interactive football experiences, we will soon begin an exciting new era.

"Next year, EA SPORTS FC will become the future of football from EA SPORTS. Everything you love about our games will be part of EA SPORTS FC – the same great experiences, modes, leagues, tournaments, clubs and athletes will be there. Ultimate Team, Career Mode, Pro Clubs and VOLTA Football will all be there."
