England's hopes of hosting the 2030 World Cup have been dealt a blow after FIFA admitted it could be held over two continents.
As reported by the Telegraph, the FA have the backing of the UK government to launch a bid for the 2030 tournament for the first time since 1966.
That would see several of London's best stadiums, including the Emirates, Stamford Bridge, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and the London Stadium all in use.
However, those hopes are now under threat after president Gianni Infantino revealed the tournament could be held in more than one continent.
Mexico and the USA will set share hosting responsibilities for 2026, and Infantino admitted the 2030 World Cup could follow suit and span an even larger distance.
"I respect the will of the people. If the will of the people will be to change, to be more open, be more inclusive of different parts of the world at the same time maybe we should do it," he said.
"We still have time. The decision for 2030 will be taken in 2024. For me, as FIFA president, the more bidders we have the happier I am.”
Wembley Stadium will, of course, play host this summer to the semi-final and final of the European Championships, which is set to take part in 12 different countries for the first time.
As a result, FIFA are looking at a similar proposal, in light of the fact it will be the competition's 100th anniversary of the World Cup, following its inauguration in 1930.
