FIFA make major rule change during Women's World Cup that could impact England

FIFA have outlawed yellow cards for goalkeepers if they encroach at penalty kicks for the rest of this World Cup – because they don't want to see a sending-off during a shoot-out.

Nigeria's Chiamaka Nnadozie and Scotland's Lee Alexander both fell foul of the law earlier this week.

The sport's global governing body has made the move because it is does not to want to see a keeper sent-off during a penalty shoot-out.

Pierluigi Collina, chairman of the refereeing committee said: “We felt the risk of a second caution during a shoot-out was too high considering the number of penalties that are taken.

“Therefore, during the knock-out phase, when a match will be decided by penalties, an encroachment of the keeper will result in the retaking of the penalty, but no caution.”

Penalties have caused much controversy during the Women's World Cup.

France's Wendie Renard fired wide from the spot against Nigeria but the referee forced a retake and she scored second time round.

Scotland stopper Alexander saved a last-gasp penalty in the clash with Argentina but was judged not to have part of her foot on the goalline.

The twice-taken penalty secured a point for Argentine and dumped Scotland out.

"Today referees cannot justify a mistake by saying they couldn’t see because VAR and GLT are there to support their decision-making," Collina added.

"Therefore if a goalkeeper commits an offence like encroaching before the penalty kick is taken, the VAR cannot do anything but intervene and inform the referee that the penalty kick must be retaken and the goalkeeper cautioned.
