- Fifa has confirmed that it will assess whether Argentina ’s players violated tournament rules by displaying a banner in support of their country’s claims to the Falkland Islands.
- Downing Street called for a probe after several players waved a banner that read “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” following their World Cup semi-final win over England . It translates to “The Falkland Islands are Argentinian”.
- Argentina was celebrating after coming from behind to beat England 2-1. The defending champions will now play Spain in Sunday’s final.
- “As is standard procedure, Fifa’s independent Disciplinary Committee is currently assessing the match reports and considering the relevant circumstances before deciding on potential further steps based on the Fifa Disciplinary Code,” a Fifa spokesperson said.
- Fifa fined the Argentine Football Association £20,000 in 2014 after Argentina’s players held up a banner with the same message. The governing body said the move, which followed a friendly win over Slovenia, had breached rules on political action and team misconduct.
