Fifa confirm Women’s World Cup watched by more than 1 billion people across the globe

Last summer’s Women’s World Cup was watched by more than one billion people worldwide, according to new data from Fifa.

The news comes in the same week the FA announced Wembley has sold out for the Lionesses’ friendly against Germany on November 9.

An audit from the world governing body revealed that a record 1.12bn viewers watched the coverage from France on digital platforms or out of home.

Of the 52 fixtures, 993.5million people watched on TV alone, while an extra 481.5m accessed coverage on digital platforms.

The USA’s victory over the Netherlands in the final, inspired by Fifa Women's Player of the Year Megan Rapinoe, was seen live by more than 260m viewers.

England reached the last four, where they lost 2-1 to the US in Lyon before being defeated by Sweden in the third-place play-off.

Fifa president Gianni Infantino described the competition - which will be expanded to 32 teams in 2023 - as “a cultural phenomenon”.
