FIFA confirm Liverpool reign as world champions will finally be over next month

While Liverpool's hopes of defending the Premier League title might have taken a knock in recent weeks, there was one crown they've known for a while they would not be able to defend.

After exiting the Champions League at the hands of Atletico Madrid in February last season, the Reds saw their hopes of winning back-to-back European Cups extinguished.

In turn, any chance of defending the FIFA Club World Cup was also ended prematurely.

Jurgen Klopp 's side were crowned world champions courtesy of an extra-time winner from Roberto Firmino against Flamengo back in December 2019.

And in a normal season, their reign as world champions would already be over with the annual tournament traditionally taking place in the final month of the calendar year.

However, FIFA announced last November that the Club World Cup would be moved to February 2021 after the coronavirus pandemic affected the conclusion of continental championships around the world.

The tournament remains on course to take place in Qatar next month, but has already seen one team drop out after Auckland City were forced to withdraw from the competition due to the COVID-19 pandemic and related quarantine measures required by the New Zealand authorities.

Following that announcement, FIFA has confirmed the draw for this season's FIFA Club World Cup, with the tournament set to commence on February 4 as Tigres UANL face Ulsan Hyundai and Al Duhail take on Al Ahly in the two second round matches.

The winners of the two ties will progress to face the winners of the 2020 Copa Libertadores final, scheduled to take place between Palmeiras and Santos on January 30, and Bayern Munich in the semi-finals on February 7 and February 8 respectively.

The FIFA Club World Cup final will then take place on February 11 when Liverpool 's extended 418-day reign as world champions will officially come to an end.
