FIFA president Gianni Infantino has told fans that football will only return once it is safe to do so and there is no risk to life.
Like a host of other sports at the minute, football across the world is currently suspended due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Both the Premier League and English Football League confirmed last Friday that both competitions would be indefinitely suspended until further notice, with the UK currently on lockdown due to Covid-19.
However, the EFL did write to clubs this week advising them not to return to training before May 16 at the earliest and that they are also aiming to resume games in mid-June.
The EFL also told clubs that they would need around two months to finish the current campaign, while the Premier League, although plenty of suggestions have been muted, are yet to confirm their plans.
“Our first priority, our principle, the one we will use for our competitions and encourage everyone to follow is that health comes first,” Infantino said.
“I cannot stress this enough. No match, no competition, no league is worth risking a single human life.
"Everyone in the world should have this very clear in their mind.
"It would be more than irresponsible to force competitions to resume if things are not 100 percent safe.
“If we have to wait a little longer we must do so. It’s better to wait a little bit longer than to take any risks.”
