FIFA 23 release date: Everything we know so far

EA Sports has finally announced the release date for FIFA 23 as well as who the next two cover stars will be.

Officially launching on Friday, September 30, 2022, the future of the FIFA franchise has remained uncertain after EA Sports ended its 30-year-long relationship with FIFA in May this year. Currently, all we know is that this instalment of FIFA will be the last one associated with the international football governing body.

It is believed that Electronic Arts will rename the football gaming franchise EA Sports FC, however, and the gaming giant has told fans that existing licensing deals and partnerships in conjunction with some major football clubs will remain. EA Sports released the reveal trailer for FIFA 23 this week which teases some of the new features that will be included in the game.

One of the biggest announcements in the trailer is the implementation of a new crossplay feature which was lightly tested in the last instalment, FIFA 22. It means that Xbox and PlayStation players will be able to compete against each other and won't be stuck playing with people on the same console.

The trailer also teased Hypermotion2 which will be an updated version of the animation system that was launched in FIFA 22. The innovative new technology claims to bring over 6,000 unique touches to the game, supposedly increasing the unique feel of every play.

FIFA 23's cover stars have also been revealed to be Chelsea forward Sam Kerr and Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Kylian Mbappé who has previously appeared on the cover of the last two FIFA instalments. It is the first time a female player has been featured on the box art of a FIFA game.

"It's an honour and a dream come true to be on the cover of FIFA 23," Sam said. "It's been incredible to work with Kylian and the whole EA Sports team, and I can't for fans to get their hands on a copy of the game."

Early access for pre-orders will begin from Tuesday, September 27 - this will only be available to fans who bought the Ultimate Edition of the game. It is likely that the 10-hour EA Play trial will offer players a limited number of hours of gameplay as well and may even go live earlier than pre-orders.
