FIFA 2026: Algeria fight back to beat Jordan 2-1 at World Cup

Algeria came from behind to beat Jordan 2-1 in their FIFA World Cup Group J match on Tuesday, boosting their hopes of reaching the last-16 stage.

The Jordanians took an early lead when Nizar Al Rashdan scored in the first half to give the team its first ever lead in a World Cup match.

But Algeria struck back after half time, substitute Nadhir Benbouali heading home from a corner kick by Riyad Mahrez to level at 1-1 on 69 minutes.

A minute later Mahrez himself almost added another goal for his side only to see his shot come back off a post. However, the ball fell to Amine Gouiri who headed in the winner in the 82nd minute.

It was Algeria’s first World Cup win since 2014 and the first time they had won a World Cup game after conceding the opening goal.

With a defeat to Argentina in their first match, Algeria can still qualify for the knockout stage by beating Austria in their last Group J match.

Jordan were eliminated after a second successive defeat, having also lost 3-1 to Austria in their opener but showing heart on their first ever World Cup appearance.

Algeria dominated much of the second half and sealed the win in front of their fans at Levi’s Stadium.
