Fiers fires his second career no-hitter in 2-0 win over Reds

OAKLAND, Calif. _ Mike Fiers threw the 13th no-hitter in Athletics history Tuesday night, beating the Cincinnati Reds 2-0 at the Coliseum.

The game was delayed by an hour and 38 minutes because of a malfunction of the light standard in left field and didn't begin until 8:45 p.m. before a crowd of 11,794.

Jurickson Profar drove in both runs for the Athletics with an RBI double in the second and a solo home run in the seventh.

Given a standing ovation from what was left of the crowd as he jogged to the mound in the ninth inning, Fiers retired pinch hitter Josh Van Meter on a popup to third base, Joey Votto on a grounder to first and struck out Eugenio Suarez on swinging strike three to record the second no-hitter of his career. He was mobbed by his teammates.

Fiers, who no-hit the Los Angeles Dodgers on Aug, 21, 2015, walked two, struck out six and threw 131 pitches, 83 of them strikes.

Drama was heightened in the sixth inning on back-to-back batters when Profar ranged into no man's land behind first base to rob Kyle Farmer of a bloop single with a diving catch, followed up by the latest Ramon Laureano miracle _ a leaping catch at the 388 sign to steal a home run attempt from Votto.

The Reds Yasiel Puig had a loud out in the second inning when his fly to center chased Laureano to the deepest part of the park, and got their firsts baserunner in the fourth inning when Jesse Winker reached on an infield error.

The ground ball with two outs went up the middle, with Matt Chapman, playing to his right on a defensive shift, got his glove on the ball but couldn't secure it.

Fiers didn't walk a man until Suarez leading off the seventh, and he was instantly erased on a double play grounder from Profar to Marcus Semien to Matt Olson. Fiers then walked Puig on 3-2 pitch before getting Derek Dietrich for a pop-up and the third out of the seventh on his 109th pitch.

The eighth inning was a breeze, with Fiers retiring Nick Senzel on a grounder to third, Jose Iglesias on a grounder to second and Tucker Barnhart on a lazy fly to right, putting him at 118 pitches going in to the ninth.

Cincinnati starter Tyler Mahle gave up only three hits in six innings, with Stephen Piscotty scoring all the way from first on Profar's two-out double into the right field corner in the second inning. Mahle gave up three hits, walked one and struck out eight.

Profar put the A's up 2-0 in the seventh by lining a two-out home run over the right center field fence against Robert Stephenson. It was his third home run of the season.

It was the first Athletics no-hitter since Sean Manaea beat the Red Sox 3-0 on April 21 of last season.
