Fiat 500 ploughs into safety barrier and flips over in footage caught on police cam

A driver was arrested after a car was driven erratically between motorway lanes, crashing into a central reservation and flipping over.

Officers from Merseyside Road Policing Unit followed the car for two minutes as it drifted into different lanes between Junction 27 and 28 of the M6 motorway.

A video posted by the unit on Twitter appears to show the car straddling the first and second lanes before crashing into the central reservation, spinning out of control and hitting another safety barrier.

The car then appears to flip over multiple times.

Merseyside's Road Policing Unit said: "Watch until the end. If ever there was a video to share to warn against the dangers of combining driving and recreational drug use.

"This is one of ours from last week. The driver was arrested for drug driving but thankfully not seriously injured."

Asked about the use of blue lights or sirens, they said: "Just to clarify some information regarding the previous video.

"The officer spotted the vehicle driving erratically and followed for approx two mins without blue lights or sirens before it crashed.

"During this time the officer was enquiring with the control room if there were any resources ahead to assist in stopping the vehicle as more than one police vehicle would better negate the risk of a potential pursuit, as you never know how a driver in this condition will react to the blue lights.

"It is worth pointing that after passing the van driver it was clear to the officer that there were no other road users ahead that could be in harm’s way, which formed part of the rationale why no attempt was made immediately to stop the vehicle."
