Fianna Fail 'Votegate' TD Lisa Chambers insists spotlight is now on Brexit

Votegate TD Lisa Chambers insists the spotlight is now on Brexit.

Fianna Fail’s Brexit spokeswoman told the Irish Mirror: “Brexit is the focus for everyone now.”

The Mayo TD said that she has nothing more to say on the phantom Dail vote scandal that erupted last week.

“That’s a matter for the Oireachtas.

“I have nothing further to say on it.”

Deputy Chambers admitted “mistakenly” voting once for Deputy Fianna Fail leader Dara Calleary.

Reacting to the decision to grant a three month extension to the UK, she said: “If the alternative is no deal and a crash out then it’s definitely welcome that we have some more time to give the UK government the time to ratify the deal.

“The negative side of it is that it prolongs the uncertainty and we know that this rolling uncertainty is having an impact on business and tourism already.

“It’s having a chilling effect where people are holding back on investment.

“They (businesses) are holding back on hiring new staff and they’re holding back on signing new contracts.

“People are thinking twice about travelling to Ireland.”

She added that Taoiseach Leo Varadkar needs to keep lines of communication open with Boris Johnson.

“We need to allow the UK space to try and get this deal through.

“The government has to continue the no deal preparations because at the end of January if it goes that far we could still have a no deal Brexit, so that isn’t off the table.”
