Fianna Fail TD suggests NPHET should be dismantled

Fianna Fáil TD Paul McAuliffe has suggested that NPHET, the State’s National Public Health Emergency Team, should be dismantled.

And a second Government TD, Fianna Fáil’s Marc MacSharry, has supported his view, stating: “Why must we persist with the Stasi-esque rules?”

Mr McAuliffe tweeted: “Honestly as we approach June and July and large numbers of people are due to be offered a first dose…

“Isn't it time we considered decommissioning NPHET?”

He was reacting to the guidelines for pubs and restaurants published today by Fáilte Ireland ahead of them reopening across in June and July.

The guidelines have recommended that there should be no music - for indoor and outdoor settings as well as a 11.30pm closing curfew.

There is a cap on how many people can be at a table and a time limit of 105 minutes for indoor dining if premises can only cater for one metre social distance.

Supporting Mr McAuliffe’s sentiment, Fianna Fáil TD Marc MacSharry tweeted his colleague and said “welcome to the party Paul.”

He tweeted: “Well hallelujah!!! Welcome to the Party Paul.

“I thought I was hearing things....No music at weddings...11:30[pm] curfew - have I missed something....Last year we had no vaccine and everyone was vulnerable.

“Why must we persist with the Stasi-esque rules?”
