Fianna Fail TD Marc MacSharry calls for FAI CEO Roy Barrett to resign

FAI chairman Roy Barrett faced a call for his resignation tonight.

It came from Fianna Fail TD Marc MacSharry who escalated his war of words with the FAI chief in the Dail.

Fianna Fail’s spokesman on Sport has blasted reform measures at the new look FAI, with Barrett, Gary Owens and Niall Quinn at the helm.

He is against the Government’s demand for six independent directors - rather than four - on the 12 person board.

And he again questioned whether Barrett had the authority to sign off on the controversial Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

The MOU was effectively the terms and conditions for the Government’s €20 million bailout of the FAI in January.

Barrett issued a personal statement last week, urging MacSharry to “check his facts”.

But the politician hit back last night and questioned if the rest of the FAI board and council were properly briefed on the MOU before it was agreed.

MacSharry said: "I respectfully suggest that the independent chairman is best advised to do two things.

“Firstly he should recheck his facts and secondly, having done so, he should resign."

Meanwhile, Noel King’s long association with the FAI has ended.

The former Ireland Under-21 and senior women’s manager is leaving his role as Player Identification Manager.

King, who also had a brief spell as the senior team’s caretaker manager, signaled his departure in an email to FAI staff today.
