Fianna Fail TD Lisa Chambers says she accidentally voted for Dara Calleary in Dail

A second Fianna Fail frontbencher has revealed she mistakenly voted for her deputy leader in the Dail last week.

Lisa Chambers, the party’s spokeswoman on Brexit, said she sat in the seat normally occupied by Dara Calleary, who was absent at the time.

Mr Calleary had stepped out to do a radio interview and Ms Chambers said she accidentally pressed his voting button "in error".

Ms Chambers said that when she realised her mistake, she immediately moved back to her own seat, which is beside that of Mr Calleary.

In a statement, Mr Calleary told RTE: "I did not, and would not, ask any other deputy to vote for me in the Dáil."

He added that Ms Chambers "mistakenly did not correct the record on the day, hence my name is registered".

Mr Calleary also revealed Ms Chambers had "contacted the Ceann Comhairle this evening to advise him of this".

Ms Chambers had previously said she had never voted for a colleague.

Speaking to RTE, she clarified: "Honestly, I took the question as an intentional vote for someone else."

"What happened was a genuine mistake. I believed that this error was insignificant when asked on RTÉ today ... For this I apologise."

The revelations come after two TDs were ordered to step down from their frontbench roles over the  Dail voting scandal.

Timmy Dooley and Niall Collins agreed to the sanction from party leader Micheal Martin, who was forced to bat off a storm of criticism on Sunday.

One Fine Gael TD said the response from Mr Martin was not enough.

It emerged on Saturday that Mr Collins, TD for Limerick, voted six times on behalf of Clare TD Mr Dooley in the Dail on Thursday afternoon.

Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghaíl confirmed he will be investigating the bizarre arrangement between the deputies.

Mr Dooley told The Irish Mirror at the weekend that Mr Collins had voted for him on the mistaken understanding that he was at the back of the Dail chamber.

But this was not the case, with Mr Dooley saying that he had, in fact, left the Dail to take a phone call.

Mr Martin said on Sunday: “I’ve spoken to both deputies and I’ve asked them, without prejudice and pending the outcome of the report that the Ceann Comhairle has initiated into this, that they would step down from the Fianna Fail frontbench, and they have both agreed to do that.

“I think that underlines the seriousness with which I take this issue, and I think it’s important that the Ceann Comhairle’s inquiry now gets underway."

“They have both assured me that they will cooperate fully with the Ceann Comhairle in relation to this particular incident,” Mr Martin added.

His request means that while Deputies Collins and Dooley have stepped down from their frontbench roles, they will continue to serve as TDs for their constituencies.
