Fianna Fail TD James O’Connor considers quitting party unless he is given roads project commitment

Fianna Fáil TD James O’Connor is considering quitting the party if he does not get a commitment from the Government on a roads project.

The East Cork TD claims he was misled to believe the Castlemartyr and Killeagh by-pass projects would be included in the National Development Plan.

He said despite repeated assurances for a while, it was not until last Sunday night that he discovered that neither of the East Cork projects would be included in the National development Plan.

When asked if he felt that he was lied to, the youngest TD in the Dáil said “yes, by a multitude of colleagues.

“I feel I have been deeply misled. I am hurt.”

If Mr O’Connor resigns, it would reduce the Government's numbers to 81, while the combined opposition numbers would then stand at 78.

When he received the call on Sunday night informing him that the East Cork road projects would not be included, Mr O’Connor said he was not given a reason.

“I want to register my anger, my upset at the fact that I was deeply misled,” he told C103’s Cork Today.

He said: "I think it's a bit rich for the Department of Transport to be prioritising projects that will cost up to €10 billion including Metro North and Metrolink in Dublin when projects in my constituency that are under €100 million in value were ignored."

Mr O’Connor also criticised other local representatives, who, he said, “sought to use this as a stick to beat me with.”

“I’ve been fighting the good fight as hard as I can behind the scenes.

“Nobody told me at any stage that it wasn’t a runner.”

He said he now has to consider his position and that he is "disgusted'" that the by-passes were not included.

In a tweet on Wednesday evening, Mr O’Connor said the Taoiseach and Transport Minister Eamon Ryan have agreed to meet him on Thursday.

He tweeted: “An Taoiseach, Micheál Martin and the Minister for Transport will meet me tomorrow afternoon to discuss the new National Development Plan document.

“I will be seeking assurances on key road projects that have not been directly identified.”

The Irish Mirror has contacted the Taoiseach’s spokesman for comment.

Last month, Micheál Martin lost a Fianna Fáil TD when Marc MacSharry resigned ahead of a motion of no confidence in Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney.

The Sligo-Leitrim TD hit out at what he described as an "undemocratic totalitarian regime" relating to how Fianna Fáil policy is developed.
