Fianna Fail's Micheal Martin is a big fan of Normal People as he hails 'superb' actors in hit drama

Normal People has emerged as one of the biggest TV hits among Irish audiences in recent weeks as the drama garners widespread praise from viewers and critics.

And now a would-be future Taoiseach has joined the ever growing list of fans of the coming of age drama series- as Micheal Martin has revealed he is a big fan.

The Fianna Fail leader has heaped praised on the adaptation of Sally Rooney's hit novel admitting he has been watching the series every week on RTE.

Speaking on Ireland AM Martin said: "I'm catching up with Normal People which I'm up to episode four I didn't get there last night. Superb

"I think it's a very good portrayal of the awkwardness and the beauty of young love, isn't it."

The politician also praised the performances in the series which stars Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones.

"And the acting is superb."

He added: "It's very good in terms of where Ireland is going that such young talent is emerging from our colleges and in the artistic world and for Sally Rooney, what a wonderful achievement for her, both for the novel itself and now having it watched all over the world.

"I bought the book for my daughter for Christmas I haven't read yet I regret.

"She read it and she thought it was a fabulous piece."

The Lenny Abrahamson adaptation has proved a massive hit since airing on Irish TV for its realistic portrayal of young people in Ireland.

However the show's intimate sex scenes drew criticism from a portion of disgruntled viewers who vented their rage on RTE's Liveline.

Normal People airs on on RTE One on Tuesdays at 10.15pm.
