Fianna Fail politician Kevin O'Keeffe deletes 'joke' limo photo after Twitter backlash

A general election candidate has deleted a photo of himself posing with a stretch limo after a backlash on social media.

Cork East Fianna Fail politician Kevin O'Keeffe wasn't feeling the love after posting the picture, which showed him beside a giant limousine at a filling station after a hard day's canvassing.

He captioned it: "After a long day, needed a fill" with Fianna Fail's slogan as the hashtag #AnIrelandForAll.

The Mitchelstown man, a farmer who has also worked in the insurance industry, may have thought it was all a bit of fun to lighten up what is fast becoming one of the most hard-fought and contentious general elections in recent memory.

But the Twitter and Instagram post drew a harsh reaction, with plenty of people pointing out that posing with a limo was not exactly a good look for a Dail hopeful in the midst of housing, health and income crises, Cork Beo reports.

The politician has since deleted the post and explained that he came across the limo in a filling station at the end of a day out canvassing and decided to have a "little joke" by slapping a campaign sticker on the side and posing for a photo.

It may not have even been the biggest social media blunder of the election so far, as Fine Gael can probably claim that title with a bizarre video depicting Fianna Fail ministers running around "looking for policy ideas" to the sound of the Benny Hill theme tune.

That post was also deleted after widespread ridicule on social media, but still got many thousands of views.

It's likely that Mr O'Keeffe will be playing it safe on social media for the rest of the campaign.
