Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin calls on Taoiseach Leo Varadkar to be honest about no-deal Brexit Irish border checks

Micheal Martin has called on the Taoiseach to come clean on border checks.

The Fianna Fail leader said the Government must be honest with the people of Ireland about the customs points that will be needed in the case of a hard Brexit.

He was speaking after a landmark speech from Leo Varadkar on Thursday night where the Taoiseach admitted that customs checks between Northern Ireland and the Republic will come back in the case of a hard Brexit.

The main Dail opposition chief wants the Taoiseach to go further and tell people exactly what is in store in the case of an increasingly likely no-deal Brexit.

Mr Martin said that “honesty” should be the best policy.

He said: “I think the Government haven’t been up front on this from the beginning…. I think if you’re honest with the people and give people the hard facts, people will go with you on the issues.”

The man who is favourite to be the next Taoiseach with some bookies also said that we should never see the return of a military border, as opposed to a trade one.

“I think we shouldn’t conflate a trade border with a military border.

“And I think that mistake has happened as well.”
