Fianna Fail just one point behind Fine Gael in latest political poll

The country’s two largest parties are neck and neck as the latest opinion poll shows Fianna Fail catching up with Fine Gael .

And with the Opposition’s popularity increasing, Micheal Martin’s plan to be Taoiseach within the next five years might just become a reality.

Last week current Taoiseach Leo Varadkar confirmed he would like to call a General Election in May next year.

But the two main parties look to be almost neck and neck, the latest Sunday Business Post/Red C Poll found.

It claimed that if a General Election was held tomorrow, Fine Gael would receive 29% support, with Fianna Fail on 28%.

Sinn Fein would receive 12% of voters’ support, while Labour would get 6%.

The poll indicated the Green Party would kick on from its local elections success, leading to a surge in support.

Meanwhile, the Taoiseach has said he would be willing to agree a deal with Mr Martin’s party, should Fianna Fail win more seats in the next General Election.

But he wouldn’t consider the option if Fianna Fail was the smaller party.

Remaining confident in Fine Gael, he said: “What I said is I would be willing to consider it.

“First of all, let there be no doubt about this. It is my intention and my plan and my expectation that Fine Gael will win the next election when it comes in May 2020.

“We will be the largest party and as the largest party we will do what the largest party always does, which is seek to form a Government. Ideally a coalition Government with a majority.

“While confidence and supply has worked reasonably well for just over three years now, a majority government would be better for the country and that’s what I want us to be in a position to do.”
