Feyenoord fans turn on Jaap Stam but Rangers hero rides to his rescue

Dick Advocaat has leapt to Jaap Stam’s defence after Feyenoord fans turned on their manager.

Stam’s side have slumped to ninth spot in the Eredivise after a 4-2 defeat to Fortuna Sittard. And despite a 2-0 win over Porto in Rangers’ Europa League group last week, supporters of the Rotterdam club are seething.

They hurled insults and abuse at Stam and his players who fell 10 points behind league leaders Ajax.

Advocaat has been linked with replacing Stam but the former Rangers boss believes the one-time centre-back deserves more time.

The 72-year-old said: "No. I am not interested in the job. I signed Jaap Stam as a player and I know him very well.

"It's very silly the fans are talking about change. He's only started the job in the summer and it will take a lot of time.

"They've not done too badly in Europe. They narrowly lost at Rangers, which can happen to any team and they beat Porto. So it's absurd that we are talking about a replacement."

But Stam accepted the Rotterdam club's fans had every right to complain.

He said: "The fans are angry, but I am angry too and so are the players.

"We are giving aways goals too easily. We showed the level we could get to against Porto, but we lost a lot of personal duels against Sittard.

"I know how it works in football. I understand the supporters' frustrations."
