Few travelers seen as Japan's Golden Week holiday starts

Unreserved seat occupancy rates for Shinkansen bullet train services out of Tokyo were 0-3% on the Tohoku-Yamagata, Joetsu and Hokuriku Shinkansen lines through 10 a.m. Wednesday, according to East Japan Railway Co.

Regarding traffic situations on expressways, major congestion was not seen nationwide as of noon on the same day, a public holiday called Showa Day, according to Japan Road Traffic Information Center.

On April 22, a government panel of experts expressed concern that the new coronavirus could further spread if people return to their hometowns or move around the country during the extended Golden Week holiday period from late April to early May. The government has reiterated its call on the public to refrain from going out.
