Leeds Christmas winter wonderland planned with ice rink, igloo bar, market and return of Thor's Tipi

The festive season in Leeds will be going ahead with a new twist this year with a Christmas-themed family trail at key locations in the city.

Leeds City Council has today (Monday) announced that Leeds Winter Favourites will be launching next month.

This comes as the German Market Christmas was cancelled for the second year in a row due to Covid-19 uncertainty.

However, in a bid to allow the festival season to go ahead, the authority and Visit Leeds, will host a new experience in the city.

This will include a winter wonderland with an ice rink, Igloo bar and pop-up market stalls in Millenium Square from November 26. A traditional Carousel will be in Cookridge Street and there'll be a brand new Tipi on Briggate.

The authority said THOR’s Tipi will also return to Victoria Gardens from November 19 along with the Wheel of Light.

The new additions to the city’s festivities complement the famous City Square Christmas tree, the ‘Dear Leeds’ lighting installation on Briggate, Rock n Roll Panto at City Varieties, and Lotherton’s Christmas Experience.

A spokesperson from the authority added that Lord Whitney’s Upon a Christmas Wish immersive festive experience will also make a long-awaited return to Harewood House having been postponed last year.

Deputy Leader of Leeds City Council and Executive Member for Economy, Culture and Education, Cllr Jonathan Pryor commented: “The Council alongside a wealth of stakeholders in the city have worked really hard to extend the Christmas offer this year and provide a wonderful experience for everyone to enjoy.

"After a diluted festive season in 2020, we are delighted that we can deliver more activities and events to Leeds this Christmas. Leeds’ Winter Favourites will ensure that everyone who visits the city this holiday season will leave with a festive feeling that is bound to last right through to the new year.

“We encourage residents and visitors alike to discover what’s on offer in Leeds this Christmas and to find their winter favourite.”
