Festive Fugitives: Boxing champ linked to £4k shotgun stashed in garden

A schoolboy boxing sensation jailed after a shotgun was found in a garden is wanted by police.

Day three of the ECHO's annual festive fugitive campaign turns to Joe Saunderson, who Merseyside Police are seeking to return to prison.

The two-time England ABAE champion was locked up after a stolen 12 gauge Beretta was discovered by officers and traced back to him and another man.

Both men - who claimed they only had the gun after being asked to pick up and drop off a parcel - had been in a stolen Audi when it ploughed into parked vehicles in Maghull, sparking a police response.

Saunderson was a passenger in the Audi A1 as it travelled on false plates through Maghull on October 6, 2017.

Just before 2pm the car crashed into two parked vehicles - a van and a BMW - on Ormonde Drive.

Witnesses recalled how the pair left the vehicle “coolly and calmly”, with Saunderson holding the double barrelled shotgun “cocked open” before his associate stashed it in a back garden as the pair fled.

Armed police were sent to the scene and found the gun, which was valued at around £4,000 and one of three stolen from a home that morning.

Saunderson admitted receiving stolen goods, aggravated vehicle taking and possession of a firearm without a lawful certificate and while being banned from having guns due to previous offences.

Saunderson, of Kirkby, was jailed for 32 months and banned from driving for 37 months.

The 22-year-old is now wanted on prison recall.

He is described as white, 6ft, of proportionate build with dark brown hair and blue eyes.
